Septic Maintenance: the short answer

Septic maintenance is a schedule: inspect every three years, pump every three to five, and keep grease, wipes and chemicals out of the tank. Systems with pumps, floats or aerators, which are now standard for new systems in Miami-Dade, need a check about once a year.

A maintenance plan puts that schedule on our calendar instead of yours. Advanced and aerobic systems also need a biennial operating permit from the state, and a service contract is the simplest way to keep it current.

We also answer the everyday questions: which cleaning products are safe, whether additives help (Florida's septic program does not assess their performance claims), and what the household can do to extend the life of the drain field.

Questions

Do septic additives or enzymes replace pumping?

No. Pumping is what removes the solids that settle in a tank. Florida's septic program only checks that an additive complies with state law; it does not assess performance claims.

What does a maintenance plan include?

Scheduled inspections and pump-outs at the right interval for your tank and household, and for advanced systems the routine service their operating permit requires.
