Septic Repairs: the short answer

Most septic repairs are to parts: baffles and tees, lids and risers, alarms, pumps and lines. They keep the system you have working. In Miami-Dade, replacing both the tank and the drain field counts as a whole new system under Ordinance 22-83 and needs DERM approval.

The parts are inexpensive next to the drain field they protect. A broken outlet baffle lets solids escape into the field; a cracked lid lets rainwater in and is a safety hazard. Fixing them early is the cheapest septic work there is.

Repairs to existing systems are permitted under state rule 62-6.015 through the Department of Health. We tell you up front whether a job is a repair or has crossed into a replacement, because the permits and costs are very different.

Questions

When is a septic repair actually a replacement?

In Miami-Dade, when both the tank and the drain field are replaced. That is a new system under Ordinance 22-83, with DERM approval and an advanced treatment unit.

Why is my septic alarm going off?

Usually because the pump chamber is filling higher than it should: a failed pump or float, a tripped breaker or a drain field that is not taking water. Silence the alarm, limit water use and have it checked.
