Septic Pumping and Cleaning: the short answer

Pumping removes the sludge and scum that build up in every septic tank, and it is the single most useful thing you can do for a septic system. The EPA suggests pumping a household tank every three to five years; in South Florida a standard 1,000-gallon pump-out typically costs $350 to $525.

Cleaning goes further than pumping: breaking up a hardened scum mat, clearing a blocked inlet, washing an effluent filter. In Miami-Dade, septage has to be hauled under a County liquid waste transporter permit and taken to an approved facility.

Pick the service that matches what you see. A routine pump-out for a tank that is due, cleaning for one that has gone years without service, unclogging when the house drains slowly, and filter cleaning if your tank has an effluent filter.

Questions

How do I know my septic tank needs pumping?

If it has been three to five years, if drains are slow, or if you notice odours or wet spots over the tank. A measured inspection tells you for sure: pump when sludge and scum reach about a quarter of the liquid depth.

Is cleaning different from pumping?

Pumping removes the liquid, sludge and scum. Cleaning adds work on what is left: breaking up hardened scum, clearing the inlet and outlet and washing a filter.
